The Art Institute of Chicago’s New Modern Wing

The Art Institute’s Modern Wing is set to open up by this time next week, Saturday, May 16th. It is being met with much fanfare as Target is sponsoring  free admission to the Modern Wing Saturday and Sunday (May 17th) of next weekend.

As reported at http://www.artinstituteofchicago.org:

“…the Modern Wing will provide a new home for the museum’s collection of 20th- and 21st-century art.
Now a decade in the making, this 264,000 square-foot building makes the Art Institute the second largest
art museum in the United States. The building will house the museum’s world-renowned collections of
modern European painting and sculpture, contemporary art, architecture and design, and photography. The extraordinary scope and quality of these collections will be a revelation; each will be displayed more comprehensively than ever before. The opening of the Modern Wing will allow the Art Institute to take its rightful place as one of the world’s great collections of modern and contemporary art.”

That same excitement is shared by smaller galleries like the Museum of Contemporary Art, who have filled the modern void that the Art Institute of Chicago could not hold.  Read more on this in Other museums hope to benefit from Art Institute’s new Modern Wing.

Nonetheless, this is an exciting time for the art world in Chicago. We are excited to see the new electronic media display and the 1940’s photography. A review of the new modern wing from the urban arts perspective is sure to come. Check back on sunday!
